Stopping Toxic Dumping

Environment Illinois Advocate, Max Muller spoke at a press event about BP’s proposed expansion in 2008. Our advocacy and organizing helped stop the expansion, which would have led to hundreds more pounds of toxic waste being dumped in Lake Michigan. Environment Illinois has since helped win numberous victories for Lake Michigan, including cleaning up mercury and other industrial toxins.

Winning Victories for Clean Energy

This fall, the Illinois General Assembly passed "smart grid" legislation that includes major provisions for renewable energy and energy efficiency that Environment Illinois fought to have included in the bill.

Finally--A Strong Federal Mercury Standard

After we helped generate the most supportive public comments that the EPA has ever received on a draft rule, President Obama announced the first ever nationwide mercury standard for power plants just earlier this year.

Attacks on public health defeated—for now.

The coal lobby and their allies are trying to block the EPA from protecting public health, but we’ve held the line against some of their worst attacks: In March, the U.S. Senate rejected a bill that would have blocked standards for soot, mercury and carbon pollution. In April, the Senate defeated four more bills that would have blocked the EPA from cutting air pollution. We need your help to keep up the fight.

On July 29th, President Obama announced the outline of new clean car standards covering cars and light trucks through 2025, which will amount to the single biggest step this country has ever taken to end our addiction to oil and tackle global warming. We need your help to finish the job.
