Increasing America’s use of plug-in electric and plug-in hybrid cars would dramatically reduce emissions that cause global warming and air pollution and would curb our dependence on oil, according to a new white paper released by Environment Illinois. Plug-in Cars: Powering America Toward a Cleaner Future answers many questions about plug-in vehicles and lays out a strategy for how to increase the number of electric vehicles on the road. It highlights data from existing research to show that electric vehicles can help to improve Americans’ standards of living.
In 2008, people in Illinois saved 259 million gallons of gasoline--450,100 cars' worth--by riding transit in record numbers. Transportation is responsible for more than two-thirds of our dependence on oil, and about one-third of our carbon dioxide pollution, according to a new report released today called “Getting On Track: Record Transit Ridership Increases Energy Independence.”

Illinois can start to transition to a clean energy economy, stop global warming and protect the environment with funding from President Obama’s proposed federal budget for 2010.
Today, President Obama signed an economic recovery plan that delivers $78.6 billion in clean energy, energy efficiency, and green transportation investments. These provisions will prevent approximately 68 million tons of global warming pollution annually, reduce oil consumption by 15 million barrels per year, and create more than 1.5 million jobs.
