Letter to the Editor: Clean Energy Economy (new window)

America can begin to rebuild it's shattered economy and create millions of jobs by adopting a robust federal energy policy that cuts our oil dependence in half and transitions to 100 percent clean electricity. Last week, Environment Illinois released a report, "Renewing America: A Blueprint for Economic Recovery," which shows how our nation can do just that through investment in energy efficiency, wind and solar energy, and public transportation.

Continued reliance on fossil fuels, crude oil, and other dirty, unsustainable resources is not an option. Energy costs for running cars, heating homes, and powering industries will only become more volatile and burdensome in the coming years, and reducing our carbon emissions to slow global warming must be a top priority. We simply cannot expect a 21st Century economy to thrive on a 20th Century model of energy production.

By repowering American, President-elect Obama has the opportunity to boost our economy with green jobs, enhance our nation's energy security, and cut global warming pollution. We were delighted that Obama campaigned on the promise that America can be a technology leader in an emerging clean energy economy.

Now, we look forward to the Obama Administration taking us in the right direction from day one with clean energy investment as a cornerstone of any economic recovery plan.
