Saving national forests

Thanks to our federation’s work, more than 1.5 million citizens nationwide called on the Clinton administration to protect pristine areas in our national forests, resulting in the Roadless Rule. When the Bush administration attempted to overturn the rule, we worked with governors in seven states to petition to protect their forests.

Letter Dear Congressman, Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes are a national treasure, comprising 90 percent of the fresh surface water in North America. The Lakes are also the lifeblood of our region -- not only as our drinking water, but as drivers of our ecosystems, economy and way of life. But the Great Lakes can only be as healthy as the small streams and wetlands that feed and clean them. Unfortunately, polluters are putting the Lakes at risk by filling in the wetlands and dumping in the streams that are those source waters, bypassing environmental rules that have protected the Lakes for more than three decades. To preserve Lake Michigan for future generations, we must ensure that all waters remain protected by the Clean Water Act.
