Obama leads on clean cars, will Illinois follow?

Cleaner cars won’t see the light of day in Illinois if the auto industry -- and their lobbyists -- get their way. Those lobbyists have been walking the halls of the Capitol, working to convince some state legislators to ignore President Obama’s lead and oppose clean cars.

Last year, Environment Illinois helped to pass a law that requires our electric utilities to help their customers save energy. If done right, this program will save about one billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, approximately the amount that 100,000 people would use in a year. Now, we're working to make sure these landmark energy efficiency standards are implemented properly. Read more.

Letter * Dear Senate President Cullerton, I urge to resist auto industry pressure and ensure that the Illinois Clean Cars Act (S.B. 1941) receives an up or down vote in the Illinois Senate. Automakers build cleaner cars for some states and dirtier cars for others. The cleaner cars are sold in the 14 states, representing 42% of the U.S. automobile market, that have already adopted the same strong automobile pollution limits. Illinois is among the states that receive the dirtier cars. President Obama has opened the door to clean cars in Illinois. Illinois should adopt the Clean Cars Standard—making the president’s home state the 15th Clean Car State—because it will improve the economy, enhance national security, and bring cleaner, cheaper, healthier cars to Illinois.
